Weight loss: Week 17

So as you can tell I haven’t been keeping up on this segment! Jumping from week 9 to week 17? That’s crazy! But I guess with a kid burning his head, end of semester, and a week long family vacation it’s easy to fall behind.
So before I reveal my numbers keep in mind I haven’t been doing ANYTHING right except trying to keep to my portion sizes..mostly. I’ve been eating junk food, and juices, and eating late at night. In fact, I ate 2 gushers packets before I wrote this. I know, NOT the portion size at all…
Measurements:
Weight: 185.5   +.5 (total –10.5)
Chest: 44.25, +1.25 (total +.75)
Belly: 41.75, +.75 (total –.25)
Hips: 42.75 + .25 (total –1.25)
Thigh: 24.75, same (total, –.2)
And I would like to add arms: 13
I’ve noticed that some of my clothes aren’t fitting as well around my arms anymore so I’d like to see that progress now as well.
So overall I’m not pleased with the results but what was I to expect? I haven’t been eating too well and eating whatever I want. \
What I’ve done to hopefully make me more successful in the future:
1st off I’m considering this my start over. I’m basically back to my original size just 10 pounds lighter this time. Which I’m still happy about! I am re-motivated
2nd I have bought all the food I was eating before that made me successful. I didn’t have the money to get them and now I am all stocked up!
3rd Andrew, my husband wants to exercise with me! At night before we can watch that show or play that game we MUST exercise! I think this will help me SO much! :)
So that’s the game plan. My goal is to get down to the total loss in each of the categories I was before.

Burn Update

 

It has been longer than I meant to give everyone an update on Austin’s condition. He is doing awesome considering. We did get a small infection in his ear though and if it wasn’t for Austin we wouldn’t have noticed it as early as we did. That story later.

We switched our services to Dr. Brown instead of the burn clinic since I just don’t trust them anymore. I gave them an extra chance. I don’t want to deal with the male nurse practitioner anymore. I liked the female practitioner there though.

We also went to Arizona for a week. That was a blast, and everyone should be jealous if they didn’t get to come there with us. :) just kidding. I was afraid that we would end up burning his burn there and not keep hydrated but we made it with no sunburns except for the part in my hair, urg. At least it was me and not someone else. Austin did develop a water blister on the back of his ear. We think it was from playing in the misters at one of the playgrounds in Arizona. We didn’t realize how wet he had gotten I guess.

Now for the story: Austin likes me to take pictures of his ear so he can see it. I know, he is SO my child, :) Well, we got this new camera and I don’t know how to use it yet. So when I took the picture, Austin looked to have an elfish ear. I blamed it on my angles and tried again. Nope still there. That is when I looked closer at Austin’s ear. It was inflamed, hot to the touch, and had an odd color to it. I called up Dr. Brown’s office and had an antibiotic to give him by the afternoon. Thank goodness we went to see Dr. Brown 2 days prior so he was comfortable to call that in. I had no time that Friday with activity day and other responsibilities to take him to the doctor too! If Austin hadn’t of asked for a picture that day we would have noticed it, and prob. would of had a full fledged scary infection on our hand! Thank you Austin for taking care of yourself!

May 29th (today)

As you can tell there are some days that look great and then other days look horrible. The bad days were when his wrap fell down at night. We are no longer wrapping his head as of today. We are nervous about it but I think it will be for the better since there have been so many little things with the wrap that have delayed his healing process.

As you can see he is looking great. And I expect it to be completely back to normal with some thinker spots on his ear thanks to the scar tissue. His healing will be completely done in 1 year. yes, 1 year. So until then I must put sun block on him and have him wear a hat every time he leaves the house. But not too bad all in all…

Burn Clinic: Take Two

I know a lot of you have been waiting to hear about the progress with Austin's burn. I will get right to that after my warning..

 WARNING: there are some picture in THIS post that are NOT of the pretty nature. If wounds and blood make you squimish this post is NOT for you!



I was told by some that it was unclear who else was injured in the incident so I thought I would first give a run down of that before I tell you what the burn clinic said.

1st- Andrew did catch on fire but his quick reaction of Stop, Drop, and Roll saved him from getting ANY burns. It worked so fast he doesn't even remember feeling the heat of the fire.
2nd- Merrill received burns on a few of his fingers from trying to stop the fire from going back into the gas tank. (At least I think that is what caused them.)
3rd- Austin- I think everyone knows how he was burned on the ear (front and back) and across his forehead
4th- Daimian (The boy whose head caught on fire) was burned on his head in 4 spots. His hair mostly saved him from harm amazingly so. He didn't need to be treated at the ER. He is being treated with cream and band-aids

Austin's ear has been doing awesome! Almost every time we change the dressing it looks better, and better. Here are some pictures of the progress:

Andrew buzzed his hair since Austin was so mad about getting his hair buzzed. We were going to let him help me cut daddy's hair but his didn't want daddy to have his hair cut either. We did it anyways..

Taken May 1st- Burn Clinic day

The nurse practitioner was optimistic about the outcome with a little horror in there as well. The top of the ear is still very concerning. The ear is just a small layer of skin on top of cartilage. So there is a possibility that the ear could get infected, and if it did, there's a chance that part of his ear would need to be removed. Obviously...worse case scenario. So no infection check!

We will continue to change his dressing 2 times a day, and his ear should be looking like the side of his face does in 1 week. Yes that soon! That was until the nurse messed up....

The nurse that was helping Austin was very kind and nice with Austin but she did his wrap all wrong. and sadly I didn't realize how wrong until too late. She barely put any Bacitracin on his wound. That was the part I knew to be wrong. She covered him in gauze and the nurse practitioner took a look at it and ok'd it. They told me to make the wrap just like that from now on. When I removed the gauze for a fresh wrap before bed the gauze stuck to his burn and made him bleed. I felt so bad for him! I made him a new wrap the way they told me to except I put 10 x the goop on it than she did. Thinking that was all I needed to make it better from hers.
 I am embarrassed that my brain didn't think more about this situation and prevented what happened next. I can only say that I believed that the burn clinic knew what they were doing, and told me everything I needed to do.

The next morning when I went to put on a new dressing. The gauze was completely adhered to his ear. I had to almost pry it off. Austin was in tears and blood was once again going down his ear but this time in multiple places and he had a huge scab where his ear connects to his head in the front. This is when I realized theirs and now my mistake. We didn't put on the non- adherent strips that goes against the burn to prevent sticking.  So we went from looking SO good to blood and scabs to worry about. I am now more concerned about him getting the infection in his ear now because of this mistake.

I called right then after getting a proper cover on Austin. I just happened to have just one more of those strips in my stash. A different nurse answered the phone and was shocked that the strips weren't provided or on the wrap we obtained at the clinic. I went and picked up more supplies from them. (so happy I was still at my sister Diane's place)

   This is after a full day of healing after the incident. I didn't think about taking a picture but you should all be happy I'm not making you look at that! They would have made you cry! I was surprise how quickly the scab went away. Currently he still has blood with every dressing change, but hopefully in a couple of days those will heal enough. I think I'll do another update in a week. That is when we would have to make an appointment with the burn clinic again. But only if he is not healed. So keep your fingers crossed!
